Nice catch Tim. I wonder if the author has searched online for his topic?
Funny, I've climbed Katahdin twice (at one time circumnavigating the entire mountain), but I don't recall the tall cairn on the summit. Either I wasn't impressed with its height, or else I'm getting too forgetful.
Thanks kindly for posting this link to my blog about cairns. And, yes, I did do quite a bit of searching on my topic, including Rock Piles, which I have been reading and enjoying. Cairns and rock piles are an endlessly fascinating subject.
